The Importance of Giving

How many times have we heard that it is better to give than to receive? And, the difference you make in someone else’s life will always be smaller than the difference it will make in your own.
As adults, most of us know these things to be true, but sometimes we get so caught up in the day-to-day grind that we need a reminder to slow down and give of ourselves— to help others through our service and care.
Giving not only lifts up those in need and improves the quality of life in our communities, but it also improves the quality of our own lives. Giving aids in our self-development. It makes us feel good about ourselves. It builds self-confidence and self-esteem, and it creates that positive energy that can literally change our lives for the better.
At a time when many people equate their value with their job titles, their appearances, their possessions, and the size of their checkbooks, giving back to others reminds each of us that it is not what we have but who we are, how we live our lives, and how we impact others, that defines our value.
If, as adults, we need a reminder of what defines our value, then who is teaching this important life lesson to our kids—the future of our country? Our children and young adults need to learn the importance of giving as well. Giving of ourselves creates a positive energy and promotes creativity. It fuels an appreciation for who we are and what is really important in life. Even if our bank account is empty and we are cold and hungry, we can still do something that will make a difference for someone else, and by doing so, we maintain a pride in who we are.
So, it is clear to see that we need to do more to help others and that we need to teach our children the importance of serving and caring for others. Now what? How do we do this? How do we get started?
