Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland
Organization Description: Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland was founded as a private, non-profit 501(c)3 organization in 1985. Since then, we have provided safe, decent, affordable housing for over 200 families in the area. We have always been committed to the development and uplifting of families and communities, not only to the construction of houses.
Volunteer Opportunity: We welcome anyone over the age of 16 who wants to lend a helping hand at the construction site. No skills required! There are trained professionals on every construction site to teach volunteers the skills they will need to know for each phase of the project. Volunteers are needed to lay flooring, paint, installing cabinets, etc.

Youth ages 5 to 15 have the opportunity to participate in an educational and hands-on building experience through our youth workshops. Youth groups, Girl and Boy Scout troops, school groups, etc. are invited to join us to learn more about our mission and goals at Habitat and also become involved in a building project. Projects might include painting, sanding, planning, and building!

Projects completed by Habitat for Humanity youth groups may be used in the building of Habitat homes, be given as a gift to a Habitat family, or may be sold in our ReStore. All proceeds from the sale of these items benefit Habitat for Humanity youth programs. For more information, ask for Jenny, the Youth Programs Coordinator.

Ronald McDonald House
Organization Description: The concept of providing a home away from home for families of children with cancer and other serious illnesses began in Philadelphia in 1973, when Fred Hill, an Eagles football player, learned that his daughter had leukemia. Hill contacted team General Manager Jim Murray and together they joined forces with the medical and business community and local McDonald Restaurant owners and operators. In 1974 the first Ronald McDonald House opened its doors, today our houses are located throughout the world.
Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers ages 15+ are needed to help with office work, maintaining the house such as cleaning, getting beds ready, organizing closets, etc. We rely on volunteers to keep the House that Love Built clean. Many of our guests have weakened immune systems, so it is very important for the House to be especially clean at all times. Volunteer cleaners have the opportunity to design their own schedule. All supplies are provided by the House.

Quilters & Knitters: Each baby goes home with a new quilt or afghan made by volunteers. Knitted sweaters, booties and hat sets are a favorite with the families as well.

Adopt a Holiday: Come to the House and decorate for a holiday.

Special Projects: Painting, bulk mailing, heavy cleaning, or other special projects can come up from time to time and help in these areas is very much appreciated.
